Walk into any health food shop and you’ll find maca root sold in at least three colours: black, red, and yellow. It’s easy to assume this is just packaging or marketing flair, but the colour of a maca root actually reflects real differences in the plant’s genetics and composition. Here’s what the current research says about each variety, and where the evidence is still catching up.
How rare is each colour?
Yellow maca is by far the most abundant, making up roughly 60 to 65 percent of a typical harvest. Red maca is the second most common, and black maca is the rarest of the three, long prized in Peru as a distinct cultivar rather than just a colour variation.
Nutritional differences between the three
Independent lab analyses show real compositional differences between the colours, not just cosmetic ones. Yellow maca tends to carry the highest levels of vitamin C and vitamin B3, alongside a higher carbohydrate content. Red maca stands out for its protein and fibre content, and it’s also the richest of the three in glucosinolates, magnesium, and potassium. Black maca generally tests higher in protein than the other two colours.
It’s worth noting that most of this compositional research comes from controlled lab analysis of the roots themselves, which is a more established science than the downstream health research discussed below.
What each colour is associated with
This is the area where people ask the most questions, and where we want to be careful about what the evidence actually supports. Yellow maca has the most human research behind it. Black maca has been studied for memory and concentration, though largely in animal and laboratory studies rather than in people. Red maca has shown some interesting results in animal studies related to prostate health markers, but this hasn’t been well studied in humans yet.
None of this should be read as a claim that any colour of maca treats, prevents, or cures a health condition. The research is preliminary, often animal-based, and not something we can responsibly translate into a promise about what a supplement will do for you.
Does the colour affect the taste?
Yes, subtly. Black maca has an earthier, slightly nuttier flavour. Red maca is a touch sweeter and milder. Yellow maca sits in between, with the mellow, malty flavour most people associate with maca powder generally.
Which one should you choose?
Because the compositional differences are real but the health research is still early-stage, we’d encourage choosing based on the qualities you can actually verify today, taste preference and third-party lab testing of the specific batch you’re buying, rather than a specific colour promise.
