What Is Maca Root?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a cruciferous root vegetable — related to broccoli and cabbage — grown at high altitude in the Peruvian Andes, typically above 4,000 metres, where few other crops survive. Andean communities have cultivated and eaten it as a staple food for centuries, traditionally roasted or boiled much like a potato before modern processing turned it into a powder.

Black, Red, and Yellow: Why Colour Matters

Maca root grows in several colour varieties — most commonly yellow, red, and black — and they aren’t simply cosmetic differences. Growers and researchers have observed that the varieties differ somewhat in their compound profiles, which is why some products specify a single colour rather than a generic blend. Nutritional Profile

As a food, maca root is a source of plant protein, dietary fibre, and carbohydrate, along with vitamin C, several B vitamins, and minerals including iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. It also contains around 20 amino acids, including all eight essential amino acids the body can’t produce on its own — a relatively unusual profile for a root vegetable.

What the Evidence Actually Supports

Maca is widely marketed for energy, libido, hormone balance, and athletic performance. It’s important to be direct about where these claims stand: as of now, none of these specific effects have an EFSA-authorised health claim in the UK or EU, meaning regulators haven’t assessed the evidence as sufficient to make those claims on packaging. Some human studies, generally small, have explored these areas with mixed results, and larger, better-designed trials are still needed before firmer conclusions can be drawn. We’d rather say that clearly than imply an authorisation that doesn’t exist.

What’s well established is maca’s role as a food: a nutrient-dense root that has fed Andean communities for generations, with a nutritional profile worth valuing on its own terms.

Why Gelatinisation Matters

Raw maca flour contains starches that some people find difficult to digest. Gelatinisation is a heat-and-pressure process that removes most of the starch content while concentrating the remaining nutrients, producing a powder that’s generally easier on digestion. It’s why we use gelatinised maca rather than raw flour.

How Maca Is Typically Used

Most people use maca powder in small daily amounts — roughly half a teaspoon to a teaspoon — stirred into porridge, smoothies, or baked goods. It has a mild, malty, slightly earthy flavour that blends easily rather than dominating a recipe.

Dosage and Who Should Be Cautious

Human trials most commonly use 1,500–3,000mg of dried or gelatinised maca powder per day, and the doses studied have generally shown good tolerability, with mild digestive upset being the most commonly reported side effect. Maca is best avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, since there isn’t enough safety data in either case. It also contains glucosinolates — naturally occurring compounds shared with cruciferous vegetables like broccoli — which can affect thyroid hormone production if iodine intake is low, so anyone with an existing thyroid condition should check with a doctor first.
