FAQs for our Maca Root and Camu-Camu berry powders

What is Maca Root Powder?

Maca Root: An Ancient Nutrient Dense Superfood

Maca is a root vegetable that has been grown in the high Andes mountains of Peru for thousands of years. An important food source to natives of the area to this day, Maca root is rich in naturally-occuring amino acids, vitamins, minerals and unique nutrients that make it a fantastic addition to modern diets. It is truly a blessing for those who add it to their wellness and well-being routines.

Are there different Varities of Maca Root?

Yes, there are many varieties (phenotypes) of maca roots, but the main popularly used varieties, as functional food ingredients, actually come in 4 varieties namely; Yellow, Red, black and Purple.

  • Yellow Maca root: the most common, with a mild nutty taste.
  • Red Maca root: less common than the yellow variety, with a subtle, slightly sweet flavour.
  • Black Maca root: the rarest variety. Its skin contains rich biological compounds.
  • Purple Maca root: A rarest nutrient-dense Andean Peruvian Maca root variety. In a special blend, it works in synergy with yellow, black, red maca roots, in order to offer consumers a balanced nutritional proportion of each variety.

Absolutely yes! Maca is a root vegetable and not a grain, ‘gluten’ only comes from grains (e.g cereals).

Raw Maca Powder has never been heated above 118F/43C. In this state, maca root powder remains a whole food that retains all its nutrients intact. Whereas, Gelatinized Maca Root Powder has been heated to remove starch content. This process does destroy some nutrients such as vitanuin C, but makes Maca Root Powder easier to digest. For example,  if you have normal digestion, we recommend Raw Maca Root Powder over gelatinized. But if you do have any digestive issues, gelatiniozed will be better for you.

  • Sundried is the traditional processing method in which Maca roots are dried in the sun for about 40 days after harvest. Sundried Maca is a bit sweeter and less expensive.
  • Premium Maca is spicier and has a higher concentration of glucosilonates – sulfur-containing water soluble compounds found primarily in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale and cabbage. It’s considered an excellent, if not superior, source of these compounds and very often containing signicantly higher levels than other criciferous (Brassicaceae) vegetable plant family.

Yes, children can take maca. Try and keep the serving size smaller than for adults. But if you have any doubts, please consult your qualified physician.

Depending on your individual goal for taking Maca Root, the most effective ways are:

  • For best results, mix it into water (warm or cold), a simple fruit juice, and take it on an empty stomach 10-15 minutes before breakfast.
  • You can also mix maca powders in smoothies, shakes and other drinks (not alcohols), as well as some kinds of foods and soups.
  • Maca originates in Peru, and it’s accorded a ‘heritage’ product of Peru. The roots form properly only in the soil of the high Andes Mountains of Peru, in accordance with God’s creations.
  • Although, Maca ios now produced in China, its variety is ver very low in quality and effect compared to Peruvian Maca. Insist on Maca from Peru.

Camu-Camu berry is a functional food that has a higher content of naturally-occuring vitamin C. It contains 40 times, more vitamin C than any other fruit in the citrus family on the planet.

  • It supports normal metabolism
  • It supports better functioning of the nervous system
  • It strengthens the immune system.
  • It protects cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
  • It has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.
  • It reduces fatigue and strenghtens energy.
  • It aids in the absorption of other nutrients such as iron.
How does Maca Root Work to support your body?
  • Maca root is a nutrient-dense food that is rich in phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids.
  • It contains unique nutrients called ‘mucaenes’ and ‘macamides’ , which researchers thought to be responsible for Maca root’s powerful hormone balancing activity.
  • An average Maca root variety has 10.2% protein, and in addition contains significant levels of naturally-occuring iron, magnesium, copper and calcium.
  • Maca root is a powerful addition to your everyday diet.

Maca root powdwers come in two basic varieties – raw and gelatininzed and share similar nutty, crunchy tastes. The only difference is based on the following:

  • Raw Maca Root Powder (Lepidium Meyenii Walp) is derived from raw maca roots that are harvested but not heated during the drying process. This is in order to preserve nutrients such as Vitamin C and enzymes at their original levels, alongside its inherent starch content.
  • Gelatinized Maca Root Powder(Lepidium Meyenii Walp) is heated during processing, but with the intent to reduce starch content in the final product. This heating process, combined with pressure reduces starch content, and ensures that gelatinized maca root powder is well digested. But this doesn’t mean it contains  any form of ‘Gelatine’ or other ingredient. Here, ‘Gelatinization’ simply means the name of the process used to remove starch content from the raw maca root.

Please note that people with sensitive digestion would definitely prefer gelatinized maca root over raw maca, mainly because of the starch content, and who are also willing to forgo the benefits of the inherent high content of Vitamin C and enzymes in raw maca root.

But a higher naturally-occurring vitamin C nutrient, combined with polyphenols and anti-inflamatory bioactives, could be achieved by choosing our Camu-Camu powder (Myrciaria Dubia) . Combine gelatinized maca root powder with Camu-Camu powder for a maximun vitamin C absorbtion. Camu Camu Powder is a powerful wellness superfood that contains more naturally-occuring Vitamin C than any other fruit in the citrus family, on the planet.
